Casa Santa Ana

A misty morn over the Valley. Within an hour, the mist will burn off and it will be another cheerful day designed for serious exploration in the Valley’s singular ecosystem. Of course, for many creatures it’s a nighttime world. Well, you can always make up for lost sleep once you’re back home.

WHITE CHRISTMAS!!!  For most of the nation, this isn’t much of a snowfall.  But for the Rio Grande Valley, it’s history on the hoof.  This 1 inch blanket—up to 3 inches in some places—came on Christmas morning, 2004, and was the first measurable snowfall in the Valley in 109 years.  There reportedly was no living human in South Texas who could remember snow on the ground in the Valley.  It was such a stunning event for the locals that there have been three, or is it four, collections of photos published. But don’t blink—by late afternoon it was mostly gone.
